The Share the Plate program has been very successful at our congregation during the past several years. Between August 2007 and August 2008, $15,053.14 was raised for local non-profit organizations nominated by our members. Between September 2008 and May 2009, an additional $9,037.73 was raised for designated organizations. Our congregation’s mission statement calls for us to “engage in outreach and service to the wider community.” Our Unitarian Universalist principles call for us to work for justice and humanity. By reaching out to the community, we are showing San Antonio who we are and for what we stand.
Despite some initial concerns that giving money to other organizations might decrease giving to our church, it appears that giving to our church has increased. This has also been the case at other Unitarian Universalist congregations that have a Share the Plate program; they report an increase in the giving nature of their members, resulting in higher pledges and a stronger budget. To learn more about how Share the Plate works in other congregations, read these articles from UU World: http://www.uuworld.org/life/articles/2390.shtml (July/August 2003) and http://www.uuworld.org/news/articles/2389.shtml (November 28, 2005).
Nominations now being sought for the 2009-2010 cycle
Please find here the nomination form for the 2009-2010 Share the Plate program. Nominations of worthy local organizations that support our purposes and principles are sought. We prefer that forms be submitted by email to fuucsa@sbcglobal.net but written forms will also be accepted. . Nominations will be accepted until Tuesday, June 30, 2009. Selections will be made by the Social Action Committee in mid-July. We will select and announce the recipient organizations this summer. We will continue to publicize the month’s donation well in advance, as well as giving the congregation more information about the chosen organization. Our vision is that we will not only give money, but stay in contact with the organization and have members who choose to get more involved.
