Music at First UU

The music at First Church is under the leadership of Minister of Music William James Ross.  Bill is well known as an organist, pianist, and conductor whose specialty is the great church and concert music of the ages, but he is equally known as a published composer and a serious improviser.  His versatility supports a wide variety of diverse types of music that we enjoy in our services.  On any given Sunday we might hear a Rhapsody by Brahms, a country Gospel song, a Beatles song,  a piece of progressive jazz or a Scott Joplin Rag.

Our fine Adult Choir provides music for services three or four Sundays per month from August through May, plus a Sunday or two in June, rehearsing each week during that time.  Membership is open to singers of all ages from teenage to older adults.  No audition is required.  It is not necessary that one know how to read music to join, but it is expected that this skill be acquired by members.  We offer classes from time to time.

Our Youth Choir is composed of young people from the second through the eighth grades.  We rehearse from fall through spring and sing for at least one service per month during that time.  Twice during the year, in the fall and in the spring, the Religious Education hour is devoted primarily to music. Members are required to register and faithfully to attend rehearsals.

Both instrumentalists and vocalists skilled in solo and small ensemble performance appear regularly to contribute to our congregational life, both in worship and in fellowship.  We have recently been enriched with some excellent rhythm being provided by percussionists who enliven our experience.

All who would like to participate in any of these groups should contact Bill Ross, Minister of Music,  email, WJRoss@satx.rr.com or telephone, 210-481-1750.
